How to "hook" in exactly 3 seconds 🎣

Every successful ad follows this 3-second pattern (+my favorite examples)

The most important question anyone asks when seeing your ad is:

“Is this for me?”

If you don’t answer that in 3 seconds → they’re gone forever.

đź’ˇ The marketing idea

The “3-second rule”:

Always start your video ads with WHO should be watching. Say their job title, name their problem, or call out their group in the first 3 seconds.

  • ❌ “Our AI-powered platform helps teams collaborate...” (everyone skips)

  • âś… “Hey Product Managers...” (right people stop scrolling)

That’s it! 👇

đź’Ž The best companies already do it

  1. Deel - “You’re the HR Manager”

  1. Gong - “Vice President of Sales”

  1. Similarweb - “If you’re a digital marketer”

  1. Hubspot - “Marketers…”

🧠 Why it works like magic

Our brains pay attention to anything that confirms our identity.

When someone calls out our job title or exact problem → we can’t help but listen. We’re wired to notice things meant “for us”.

From my experience, this becomes even more powerful on channels with less accurate targeting, like YouTube or TV, where your ad reaches mixed audiences.

🎬 Your playbook for the first 3 seconds

  1. Direct role call: “Hey sales leaders...”

  2. Specific scenario: “Taking a trip with friends?”

  3. Clear problem: “Building your online business?” / “Need to learn the best way to learn math and science”

That’s literally all you need in the first 3 seconds of your ads.
